What is Google AdSense? This programme is a superb way of making a little extra cash from your website. Some people produce websites solely for the purpose of using AdSense on their web pages. Many bloggers and website owners have made lots of cash from Google AdSense and continue to earn thousands of pounds every month, but the harsh reality is most sites don’t. You need thousands of visitors a day to earn the big bucks and that is easier said than done.
Advertisers bid to place ads on websites that are relevant to their products; Google then places these ads on their search engine results page or on websites that are signed up to the AdSense programme. Advertisers can bid, 1pence rising upwards, with more competitive markets paying quite few pounds per click. Google never tells website owners how much an advert is worth, and the money earned is split between Google and the website owner.
Anybody who owns a website can apply to have a Google AdSense account, but make sure you have some good content on your website before you apply as Google will inspect your site before accepting you. You need to make sure your site has at least ten pages of content, and that content needs to be unique and relevant to your chosen niche. After your first site has been given the green light you can add more sites to your account; but you would probably be better off concentrating on one site to start with, as you will probably spend many hours researching and writing about your chosen niche.
There are many rules to follow when using Adsense on your website and you will need to familiarise yourself with the Webmaster guidelines. Here are just a few requirements.
• Don’t trick visitors into clicking your ads
• Don’t click ads on your own website
• Don’t encourage others to click ads on your website
• Don’t place ads under misleading headings
• Do create sites with unique content(Don’t copy other sites)
You can read the full guidelines here
Google are pretty smart and they know what niche your site is about by looking at your title tags and by examining the content on each page of your site. Google then knows what ads to place on your site. So if your site is a blog about musicals you would probably find ads for West End shows or musical DVD’s. Some niches pay better than others and you can get an idea of how much you may be paid per click by using the Google Adwords Keyword tool.
Once you have been accepted into the AdSense programme you are free to start placing ads on your site; this is a relatively easy process which consists of you setting the parameters for the ads, and when you have done this Google will produce some code which you place in the pages of your website. There are many different ad sizes available and you may want to try different variations to see what works best for your website. There are many colours available and you can decide which colour fits your site by trial and error.
As I stated earlier Google AdSense is a fantastic way to monetise your site but you will only make really big sums by hard work. It is not a get rich quick scheme. You will need to receive thousands of visitors to your site to make any decent money; but don’t let that stop you from trying. Choose a niche that you know a lot about or something you know you will enjoy writing about as you will have to spend many hours researching your chosen topic. You can expect somewhere between 1 – 5% of the visitors to your site to click an ad on your site, that’s between 10-50 people per thousand page views.
So good luck if you decide to use Google AdSense on your site and here’s to your future success.
